BMI is a simple screening measure calculated from height and weight only — it does not directly measure body fat and does not account for age, sex, or muscle mass. It can be inaccurate for athletes, pregnant people, children and teens, and older adults. This result is not medical advice; talk to a healthcare professional about your health.

What BMI actually measures

Body Mass Index is a simple ratio of weight to height (kilograms divided by height in meters squared, or an equivalent formula using pounds and inches). It's a screening number, not a diagnosis: it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, and it doesn't account for age, sex, bone structure, or pregnancy.

Reading the category ranges

This calculator reports the standard World Health Organization adult BMI category ranges: underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese. These ranges are population-level reference points, not personal targets, and they were developed for adults rather than children or teenagers.

  • Underweight, normal, overweight, and obese are population reference ranges, not individual verdicts.
  • Athletes and very muscular people can show a higher BMI without excess body fat.
  • The categories are designed for adults and don't apply the same way to children or teens.

Not a substitute for medical advice

This tool gives you a number and a reference range, not a health assessment. If you have questions about your weight, body composition, or overall health, talk to a doctor or another qualified healthcare professional who can look at your full picture.

Frequently asked questions

BMI is a quick screening ratio, not a full health assessment. It doesn't measure body fat percentage, muscle mass, or where fat is distributed, so two people with the same BMI can have very different body compositions.
